Airflow FAQs

Hygienists are trained professionals who not only will professionally remove bacterial build up, tartar and staining but also show you how to maintain good oral health at home. They will give you bespoke advice on how to get the most from your home care routine and show you how to use different aids such as floss, interdental brushes, and electric toothbrushes so you can maintain a healthy smile.

The frequency of hygiene visits varies from person to person, depending on your risk factors, any presence or history of disease, or how quickly you get a build up of tartar. Speak to your dentist or hygienist to find out what they would recommend for you.

Airflow/airprophy is a hygiene technology which uses a warm water system and cleaning powder to gently but effectively clean the bacterial biofilm off your teeth and gums. It is safe to use around implants. It is really helpful for patients with sensitivity who would ordinarily struggle with a professional clean. It can also be used to remove extrinsic stains.

Gum disease is an inflammatory disease of the soft tissues around your teeth. If can cause bleeding, swelling, recession of the gums, sensitivity and mobility of teeth, and ultimately, if left untreated, tooth loss. It can also be completely painless and only present in its late stages.

Gum disease is caused by bacteria around your teeth and gums triggering an immune reaction which varies in severity depending on certain risk factors. Smokers, Diabetics, people with cardiovascular disease and certain autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, are more at risk of developing gum disease. There also appears to be a genetic susceptibility in some people.  Speak to your dentist or hygienist if you are worried you might have gum disease.

Gum disease cannot be reversed but can be stabilised. Through a combination of excellent home care, and professional deep cleaning of the affected areas, most patients can stop the disease from progressing and stabilise the condition. This can take many months and sessions of treatment and requires a strong commitment to good home care. When conventional approaches are not sufficient to control the disease, it may be necessary to see a dentist with special interest in Periodontology or a specialist. Speak to our team if you need help or advice about gum disease.
